Plan of earliest settlement level at Polyanitsa. Early Chalcolithic settlements were usually sited on Neolithic tells which largely influenced their plan, but an expanding population spread to undeveloped north-east Bulgaria where relatively sophisticated planning appeared.
Clay 'cult table' from Axmak. The horns from the animal's head are missing.
Left: Painted clay Cucuteni-Tripolye 'incense-burner' from Trusesti.

Right: Biconical 'incense-burner' found near Plovdiv. These 'egg-cups', undecorated, also appear at Troy (Schliemann 1880).

Centre Left : Clay figurine from Luka Vrubletskaya.

Right : Fragment of clay figurine from Olynthos. Incised decoration on clay figurines may represent clothing or ornaments or emphasize bodily contours. Flat bone figurines, often highly schematic are common in the Gumelnita and Salcuta regions, sometimes partly encased in copper.

Marble figurine from Blagoevo, near Razgrad. Marble figurines are comparatively rare, but many in all materials have small holes drilled along each side of the head.

Religious symbols of the later Chalcolithic period reflect a gradual evolution away from the anthropomorphic and towards solar cults throughout the whole Carpatho-Balkan region.
